SHOOTING STAR
a shooting star
shines for a moment
then goes down
as it enacts
its inevitable descent
I wonder if
it feels fear
as it nears the ground?
EARTHWORM
alive
i crawl
aimlessly moving
while you pour the base
i writhe in agony
as you chuckled
and left me
to die.
DEWDROPS
condensation
the scientists imply
revelation
that God does cry
ELECTRIC FAN
moves in a cycle
like whirlpools do
but it does not take in
it gives away
a breath of air
on summer days
until we pull the plug
and stop it.
I was just hanging around my room yesternight when I came across this book my sister owned. It's a book full of poems. For one, I've never really liked this form of literature. As far as I remember, I just make poems when necessary, e.g. for assignments in Filipino and English. Though I must admit some poems sometimes leave me in a pondering state afterwards, like Richard Cory.
This book , though, is different. It does not contain long-versed poems like all others have. Rather, it is a collection of some of the most beautiful poetry I have ever read. It's poetry in its simplest. Using as few words and lines as possible, this collection proved that simplicity IS beauty.
I've been encouraged by this book to write my own. So in the dead of the night I concocted the four poems written above. Now I imagine that I sound nerdy right now. But those who DO understand see the beauty in my poems, bias aside. Lol. At any rate, I'm glad how these poems turned out.
Now I remembered how my writing career started! It's in Grade 2, when a teacher asked me to write a poem for our school paper. With the promise of my work being published, I made two beautiful poems that earned my teacher's praise. But it wasn't published; the editor-in-chief then said that they were too good- in fact too good to be understood as a Grade 2 student's handiwork. That's a compliment, I guess.
From then on, writing has become an easy task. Look at me now, writing poetry even in summer! But then again, I think it's just a by-product of unutterable boredom. Now I don't remember where those Grade 2 poems are, but thanks to them and my teacher, I developed a palate for literature, which I learned later on is an acquired taste.
